Thoreau's Journal: 30-Jan-1852

I doubt if Emerson could trundle a wheelbarrow through the streets, because it would be out of character. One needs to have a comprehensive character.

A pointless quote from Thoreau? I think not! An interesting comment on the deteriorating friendship between Thoreau and his mentor Emerson. There are more pithy and perhaps more easily understood quotes that can stand alone without background on the fairly lengthy Jan.30,1852 entry such as this that Thoreau may address in response to Anonymous "...yet most of the audience did not know but it was mere incoherent and reckless verbiage and nonsense. I lose my respect for people who do not know what is good and true."
